MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Western Michigan track and field team won its seventh straight Ball State Triangular defeating Miami, Ball State and Northern Illinois with a score of 158.50 on Friday night.
The RedHawks finished in second with 144.50, Ball State in third with 122 and Northern Illinois in last with 78. Western Michigan took four event titles on the day.
"It wasn't easy," said head coach
Kelly Lycan. "We had to scratch and claw to get the win. We didn't place some of our top people in their top events but I think sometimes it's good when you have to scratch to get the win."
Ashley Hunault took first place in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, six inches. Teammate
Iris Campbell finished behind her in second place with a personal-best distance of 18 feet, 8.50 inches. Hunault also took second place in the 60m dash with season-best time of 7.71 seconds.
Andrea Arnold took first place in the 200m dash with a time of 25.13 seconds.
Cha'nese Mendenhall finished with a time of 26.08 seconds to also score in the event for the Broncos.
Samantha Tomerlin made a rare appearance in the 800m run and took first place with an incredible personal best time of 2:13.19.
"Sam is really setting herself up to run some great times in her long distance races next week," added Lycan. "Knowing she has that kind of speed at the end of the race makes her really dangerous."
The Broncos also took first place in the 4x400m relay with
Ariel Arnold,
Jeriesha Tucker,
Brittany Calhoun and
Leya Munwam combining for the win. Tucker had a good day in the mile run with her fastest time of the season with a time of 5:05.92.
Jenna Matthews and Kesley Burgess finished back-to-back to take second and third place in the 3,000m run. Matthews had a time of 10:29.57 and Burgess clocked in at 10:32.88.
The Broncos took second and third in the shot put with senior
Stephanie Mitchell throwing 46 feet, two inches and
Andrea Hiler throwing 43 feet, 7.25 inches. In the weight throw freshman
Chelsea Gerbers placed second with a season-best distance of 52 feet, one inch.
"It's good to win," concluded Lycan. "It's always one of our main goals to win all of our scored meets and we did that. The secondary goal was to get some momentum going into the MAC Championship and we did that too. It's going to be exciting. I think there are several teams that have a real chance at winning the MAC and we're one of them.
Up next for Western Michigan is the MAC Championship at Bowling Green next week.
