FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Jerry Kuhn made a season-high 33 saves and combined with goals by
Max Campbell and
Dane Walters earned his first career shutout as Western Michigan defeated No. 16 Alaska in front of 3282 fans at the Carlson Center late Saturday night.
Alaska came out strong in the first period, pressuring the Broncos early and outshooting them 11-8. Despite the energy by the Nanooks, it was Western Michigan who struck first with 1:04 remaining in the period.
Shane Berschbach passed it to
Chase Balisy behind the goal-line and just right of the net. Balisy waited and Walters was open in the slot and banged it home from a few feet in front of the crease for his fourth of the season. Balisy tallied his 10th assist of the year and Berschbach added his team-leading 11th helper on the season.
Western Michigan (11-6-5, 5-5-4-3 CCHA) extended its lead to 2-0 with 1:04 remaining in the second period on another power-play goal, this time by Campbell. Campbell got the puck from
Greg Squires in the right circle and blasted it past UAF goalie Scott Greenham on a one-timer for his team-leading 11th of the season.
WMU had plenty of work left to do in the third period, killing off three power plays and stopping 14 shots. The Bronco penalty kill held Alaska off the board during seven power plays in the game.
Western Michigan welcomes a red-hot Ohio State team that has won six straight to Kalamazoo for a weekend series on Friday and Saturday at 7:35 p.m. Friday's game will be broadcast on both Comcast and Bronco Insider, while Saturday's game will be streamed live by Bronco Insider.
