KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan track and field team broke three event records and took eight event titles as they opened the season with a 75-63 win over Toledo at the annual Icebreaker meet on Friday evening at Read Fieldhouse.
Stephanie Mitchell started off the meet with first place finishes in both the weight throw and the shot put. She threw a distance of 49 feet 1.50 inches to win the weight throw with
Chelsea Gerbers and
Sarah Morris right behind her. WMU actually took the top six spots in the event.
Mitchell's distance of 46 feet, 9.50 inches in the shot put not only gave her the title but was also a new personal best and an Icebreaker record. She surpassed former Bronco Kristalyn Mauch's former record of 46 feet, 2 inches. The Broncos once again dominated the event as they took the top five spots with
Kaylee Finney in second, Gerbers in third and fellow freshman
Stephanie Negrete in fourth.
Sophomore Iris Cambell had a great day, taking two event titles including the high jump in which she hit a height of 5 feet, 5 inches. It was the first time Campbell had competed in the indoor high jump in her collegiate career. Sophomore
Victoria Reyes placed fourth for the Broncos in the event as well.
Campbell also took home first place in the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.89 seconds. Junior
Amanda Fenton finished just behind her in second place with a time of 9.16. The sophomore from Emmett, Mich., was all over the place at the Icebreaker, also taking third place in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 18 feet, 1.50 inches. She was only bested by teammate and school record-holder
Ashley Hunault. Hunault jumped a distance of 18 feet, 2.50 inches to start off her senior season. In the triple jump it was freshman
Chiara Allen coming in third for the Broncos with a distance of 36 feet, 6.75 inches.
After missing most of the 2010 season due to injury,
Stephanie Okolo started off her junior year placing second in the 60m dash with a personal-best time of 7.72 seconds. Okolo also took third place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.73 seconds, just behind freshman
Andrea Arnold, who took second with a time of 25.57.
Senior
Victoria Chatman came into the Icebreaker knowing she was the top 400m dash sprinter in the Mid-American Conference and backed it up in her first action of the season, taking the title with a time of 57.78, nearly a second faster than Toledo's Sarah Woodrum and her second place time of 58.42.
Sophomore
Rachel Whitley took first place in the 800m run with an Icebreaker record time of 2:18.09. She broke teammate Jereisha Tucker's time of 2:20.30 that was set last year. Tucker took fourth place in this year's race with a time of 2:21.87.
Toledo's Ari Fisher set a meet record in the mile run with a first-place time of 4:55.22 but senior
Samantha Tomerlin was right on her heels for the Broncos and took second place with a time of 4:55.22.
Junior
Amber Brunmeier took first place in the 3,000m run with a personal-best time of 10:28.27 for WMU's lone distance title on the night.
WMU's 4x400m relay team of
Andrea Arnold,
Ariel Arnold, Allen and
Whitney Freeman combined for a meet-record time of 3:54.82 seconds in their first-place finish. The Bronco “B” team took second place with time of 3:59.70, with Toledo's top team taking third place with a time of 4:05.70.
The Broncos head to Bowling Green, Ohio, the site of the 2011 Indoor MAC Championships to compete in the Bowling Green Challenge on Saturday.
