KALAMAZOO -- After falling behind early, Western Michigan University's hockey team scored six unanswered goals to earn a 6-1 victory over Northern Michigan and extend their unbeaten streak to 11 in front of a sellout crowd of 4,027 fans at Lawson Arena Saturday night.
After spotting the Wildcats a 1-0 lead after the first period, WMU scored three goals in each of the final two periods to extend the nation's longest unbeaten streak to 11 games. Six different Broncos scored goals, with
Chase Balisy and
Shane Berschbach tallying a goal and two assists apiece for a three-point night.
Jerry Kuhn turned aside 17 shots to improve to 7-1-4 on the season. With the victory, the Broncos improved to 14-6-8 overall and 8-5-7-4 in the CCHA, earning the sweep and taking sole possession of fourth place in the league.
After falling behind 1-0 on a Greger Hanson goal in the first period, WMU controlled the pace the rest of the way. The Broncos kept the offensive pressure on Wildcat goaltender Jared Coreau, peppering the freshman netminder with 50 shots. Coreau made 44 saves, falling to 4-5-2 on the season.
Berschbach began the scoring for the Broncos 5:47 into the second period. With time winding down on the power play, Balisy skated into the slot and fired a pass to Berschbach down low. As the power play expired, Berschbach fired a shot from the tough angle at the side of the net for his seventh goal of the season.
Mike Leone also picked up an assist on the goal.
Slater scored what turned out to be the game-winner for the Brown & Gold at the 7:35 mark of the period. Slater skated down the slot and fired a backhanded shot that was stopped. The captain corralled his own rebound and fired it into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season to give WMU a 2-1 lead. Berschbach and Balisy picked up the assists on the goal.
Hard work behind the net helped earn the third goal of the night for the Broncos.
J.J. Crew outmuscled a Wildcat defender and moved the puck to Leone in the corner. Leone centered to
Ben Warda at the top of the left circle, who spun and fired a wrister into the corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season. The assist for Leone was his second on the night and part of a productive three-point weekend for sophomore.
The Broncos kept up the pressure in the third period. A face-off win by Crew set up the Broncos next goal at the 10:49 mark.
Dan DeKeyser controlled the puck off the win by Crew, skated to the mid-blue line and fired a shot into the top corner for his third goal of the season and a 4-1 Bronco lead. Crew picked up his second assist of the night on the goal.
Another face-off win by Balisy helped give WMU it's fifth goal of the night.
Matt Tennyson controlled the puck and found a circling Balisy, who fired it into the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season at the 15:53 mark. Berschbach also picked up an assist. With the goal, the freshman tied
Max Campbell for the team lead with 25 points.
Ryan Watson added another goal in the closing seconds, picking up a loose puck and beating Coreau over the shoulder with 11 seconds to play. The goal was Watson's fifth of the season and second in as many nights.
WMU will look to extend its unbeaten streak next weekend when it hosts Bowling Green for a two-game series beginning Friday, Feb. 4. Face-off at Lawson Arena is set for 7:35 p.m. with live coverage being provided by the Bronco Radio Network and Bronco Insider.
