KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan volleyball team hosts its first home match of the season on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against 2009 Summit League Tournament champion and NCAA Tournament participant IPFW.
Tuesday's match will mark the first 2010 live video broadcast of Bronco Insider. Free live stats will also be available.
The home opener begins the build up for Western Michigan Volleyball Cares. Fans are encouraged to pick take home a jar and collect
their loose change and then bring the jar back on Volleyball Cares
Night on Oct. 19 vs. Notre Dame. All
the proceeds collected from the jars will be donated to the American
Cancer Society on behalf of the Volleyball Cares Initiative. There
are 100 jars to be handed out, all decorated by members of the volleyball
team.
The Broncos (2-1, 0-0 MAC) are coming off a triumphant trip to Ohio that included the program's first win against the Pac-10 on Friday vs. Arizona State, 3-1, in Dayton, and the 45th win in program history over the Big East on Saturday in Columbus over Pittsburgh, 3-0.
The Mastodons (2-1, 0-0 Summit) won their 2010 IPFW Invitational with wins over Saint Louis (3-2) of the Atlantic-10 and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (3-1) of the Horizon League. IPFW was picked to finish second in the 2010 Summit League Preseason Coaches Poll.
Junior setter Sam Viox was named to the Sports Imports Classic All-Tournament Team as she dished 11.14 assists per set to lead WMU to a .239 attack percentage and 92 kills. Viox spread the ball around to five different attackers that finished the tournament with double-figure kills.
Senior outside hitter Allyson Doyle hit .313 with 26 kills and 33 digs. Doyle moved into fourth in WMU history with 1,250 career digs to pass Jillian Mitchell (2006-09) and Schea Fissel (2002-05). She had a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs vs. Arizona State for the 36th of her career and tied Kathryn Babcock (2003-06) for second all-time at WMU.
After its mid-week home tilt, Western Michigan goes back on the road this weekend for the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind. The Broncos will play tournament host IUPUI and Wright State on Saturday and DePaul on Sunday.
