DAYTON, Ohio -- Led by 16 kills and three blocks from sophomore middle blocker Jessica Brown, Western Michigan volleyball defeated Arizona State, 3-1 (25-17, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20), on Friday afternoon at the Dayton Flyer Classic.
The Broncos (1-0) were 0-10 all-time against the Pac-10 and winless in two previous outings against the Sun Devils (0-1) before breaking through in the 2010 opener. Head coach Colleen Munson is now 4-0 at WMU in season openers on neutral courts.
Junior Ashley Turnage added 11 kills and three blocks, while senior Allyson Doyle registered a double-double of 10 kills, 10 digs and three blocks.
Freshman libero Lena Oliver led all players with 24 digs, while fellow freshman Gillian Asque added 16 digs and eight kills. Junior setter Sam Viox led all players with 50 assists, in addition to six digs and three blocks. Freshman Ali Gossen added nine kills, three digs, two blocks and two aces.
"Sam did a great job of distributing the ball and involving all of her hitters to keep ASU off balance," Munson said.
The Broncos hit .245 with 56 kills, while holding Arizona State to .214 attacking with 51 kills. WMU also had 14 more digs (64-50) and two more blocks (8.0-6.0). Arizona State had a match-high six aces, but also misfired 10 more times at the service line.
"We knew this team had a lot of potential, but they had to see it against someone other than themselves in practice," Munson said. "Arizona State is a quality Pac-10 team and they tested us today. We had to refocus after every point to be successful and I was pleased with how we handled ourselves today."
The teams traded the first six points, before WMU rattled off four in a row to take the lead, 7-4, for good. A bad set by the Sun Devils and kill by Doyle pushed the lead to five, 10-5, and forced an early timeout from ASU. The Sun Devils cut the lead to three, 13-10, but then Asque added a kill, followed by a solo block from Gossen and assisted block from Brown and Viox. The offense took over with kills from Brown and Gossen and then Viox made a solo stuff to put WMU up nine, 19-10. ASU came back within five, 22-17, but Doyle and Turnage combined on a block and WMU ended the set with kills by Turnage and Doyle.
The Broncos hit .314 to open the season with 14 kills, four by Brown, while Asque had eight digs to help hold ASU to .049 hitting with 11 kills and nine errors, including five WMU blocks.
The teams traded the first 10 points until WMU scored twice to take more than a one-point lead, 7-5. ASU forced six ties, but WMU still led, 14-13, after an ASU error. The Sun Devils got a kill on the next play and WMU missed its next three attacks to fall behind, 17-14. Arizona State continued to puill away with a 12-3 run to end the set, 25-17, and even the match.
WMU hit .057 with nine kills and seven errors, while ASU hit .294 with 14 kills and four errors.
The Sun Devils scored the first two points of the third set, but WMU came back with five consecutive kills to take early control. Arizona State came back to even the score, 8-8, before back-to-back kills by Turnage and Gossen pushed the lead back to two, 10-8. The Sun Devils cut the lead to one six times, but couldn't tie. Kills by Gossen and Asque helped WMU go back up three, 17-14, but ASU pulled within one, 18-17, again. Turnage registered another kill to push the lead to two and then Brown had one assisted block and back-to-back kills to put WMU up, 22-18, and force ASU to use both timeouts.
Arizona State rattled off the next three points to cut the lead to one, 22-21, and had a big swing to tie, but Doyle had other ideas. She dug the swing by ASU's All-Pac-10 outside hitter Sarah Reaves and it fell over the other side of the net for a kill. An attack error by ASU and another kill by Brown ended the set for WMU, 25-21.
Both teams hit well with WMU hitting .286 on 17 kills and five errors, while ASU hit .282 with 14 kills and three errors. WMU's defense was sound behind 13 digs in the set by Oliver, while Brown hit .400 with a set-high five kills.
The Broncos started the fourth set with a back row kill by freshman Taylor Richard and built on the lead with a block by Brown and Viox, followed by kills from Brown, Asque and Gossen, 5-1. The Broncos continued to keep the lead around four points until ASU closed to 12-11. Back-to-back kills by Gossen and Turnage gave WMU breathing room, but ASU was right back to within one, 14-13. The Sun Devils then missed the serve and Doyle had a kill to force an ASU timeout, 16-13. After the timeout, Gossen registered the only two aces of the match for WMU back-to-back and then Doyle and Turnage combined on a block to put WMU up six, 19-13.
Arizona State came all the way back to within three, 23-20, but Brown terminated a set from Viox and the Sun Devils air-mailed a shot on match point to give WMU the win, 25-20.
The Broncos hit .323 with 16 kills, five by Brown, while the Sun Devils hit .258 with 12 kills. The Broncos had two aces to none for ASU and two blocks to none for ASU in the final set.
