MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Western Michigan rallied from a 4-2 deficit to tie Northern Michigan 4-4 before defeating the Wildcats in the shootout to get two points on the weekend at the Berry Events Center on Saturday night.
Four different Broncos scored in the comeback with
Dane Walters,
Max Campbell,
Kyle O'Kane and
Matt Tennyson each netted on the night.
Jerry Kuhn started the game in net but was pulled in the second period before being reinserted in for the shootout.
Northern took a 1-0 lead at the 7:34 mark of the first period after Greger Hanson back-handed in a rebound on a shot by Erik Spady. The goal was Hanson's third of the season with Spady tallying his third assist of the season and Mike Maltese also tallied his third helper.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead during a five-minute power play after WMU's
Ian Slater was ejected from the game for checking from behind. NMU then had a five-on-three advantage after
Luke Witkowski was called for boarding and Tyle Gron put the puck between Kuhn's legs for his ninth goal of the season and second of the weekend. Kyle Follmer and Andrew Cherniwchan each tallied assists on the goal.
The Broncos took one back after Walters broke up a play at center ice while on the penalty kill. Walters took it in all alone on NMU goalie Reid Ellingson and went top-shelf for his second goal of the season and first-career short-handed goal. The unassisted goal came at 17:55 of the first period and cut the lead to 2-1.
With the major penalty still in affect, the Wildcats capitalized again and it was Gron picking up his third of the weekend. He took a pass from Erik Higby in front of the crease. Gron's first shot was stopped but Kuhn couldn't cover the rebound and the junior poked it in for his second of the night.
Northern Michigan tallied its fourth goal of the night just 29 seconds into the second period after Justin Florek went high and glove side on Kuhn for his sixth goal of the season. Higby and Scott Macaulay each tallied assists on the goal.
Western Michigan cut the lead to 4-2 at the 4:01 mark of the second period on a goal by Campbell. Campbell took a pass from
J.J. Crew and brought the puck down the right side of the ice, firing past Ellingson's stick side for his seventh goal of the season.
The Bronco comeback continued as O'Kane netted his third of the season to cut the lead to 4-3. O'Kane took a rebound on a shot by
Derek Roehl and threw it past Ellingson's out-stretched leg and into the net at the 13:44 mark of the third period. Roehl picked up his third assist of the season and
Dennis Brown tallied his fifth helper of the season.
WMU tied the game 4-4 minutes later on the power play goal by Tennyson. Tennyson got the puck during the cycle from
Shane Berschbach and he fired his puck off the right post and it bounced back into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Chase Balisy also tallied an assist on the game-trying goal.
Neither team took advantage of the overtime period and the game was settled in the shootout.
Reminiscent to his shootout goal against Ferris State, Brown was the lone Bronco to tally in the shootout. He went left of the goal, forced Ellingson to the ground and then just slid the puck around his leg for the tally. Kuhn was reinserted for the shootout and made saves on all three NMU attempts to help WMU earn the extra point.
Western Michigan heads back to Kalamazoo to battle with Lake Superior State for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
