WMU vs. Canisius 10/9 Quotes

Quotes

Forward Kyle O'Kane:

On the improvement from the first game:

"We thought we played hard all night, we just want to improve each and get better. I thought we did that tonight. We consistently put the puck on the net. A couple penalties late hurt us last night, but tonight we bounced back and went to it."

"Just to get better each day, whether it's in the defensive zone, whether it's in the offensive zone. We want to improve in every step of the game, whether it's in our neutral zone or not, we need to be better each game."

On Canisius Forward Cory Conacher:

"He's a great player. He has great skills and you can't let a guy like that get too much room because obviously he'll capitalize. Three goals last night in the game, but we key marked him tonight."

On the mentality going into overtime:

"We thought we were doing all the right things. We had 50-plus shots, we just needed to get that greasy goal- that third, that fourth effort. Campbell scores a simple goal, just get it on net, crash the net and it's a goal."

On sustaining early leads:

"It's something we need to work on as a team. That's two leads we've kind of let go but we really showed character to come back and get that last goal and I'm proud of our teammates and I'm proud of my team."

Head Coach Jeff Blashill:

On the overall effort:

"It's obviously good to get that first win, but more importantly was in the fashion that we did it. I thought our guys were very very good all game. No offense to Canisius, but I thought we deserved that game, so to get that type of effort is outstanding, especially after a tough meeting this morning with the players. I thought they responded very well."

"I thought our 'D did a much better job of using each other and going d-to-d, going d-reverse and using each other in the neutral zone so that we kept possession of the puck. Last night, we'd kind of get it and throw the puck up the boards and now there's fifty-fifty pucks in play and next thing you know, they have possession of the puck. We want to keep possession whenever we have a chance and I thought we showed a lot of glimpse of that today and I thought our 'D did a good job. I also thought that last night we had lapses and mental mistakes. We had fewer mistakes tonight, and this game comes down many times to who makes the least mistakes and I felt our guys did a good job of that."

On Canisius Forward Cory Conacher:

"We were trying to shut him down last night and that speaks to the kind of player he is. I thought for a lot of the night we had a couple of 'D paired up against him and I thought they did a real good job of  at least making him earn his offense. He's always going to get chances with that type of talent, but at least we made him earn it."

On the message heading into overtime:

"Keep playing the way you're playing. I think there's times where you over coach and we were doing everything the way we wanted it to be done. There wasn't a whole lot of mistakes to talk about, we just needed to keep playing the way were playing. I thought if we did that we'd be in position to score the goal. Obviously we had a lot of shots before that and at some point, one has to go in."

On using five forwards on the power-play:

"It was a different look, it was kind of a combination of the two units and since there was only a minute on that power play we thought let's put those guys out there. It didn't really work. We just weren't able to gain entry into the zone and gain control. That's something we'll try at times. I'm not afraid to use forwards back there on the point. We'll do it when we need to."

Goaltender Nick Pisellini:

On the difference tonight:

"I just think we kind bared down today and watched a lot of film, broke it down to what we needed to accomplish. We just did the little things to win the game."

On his mentality:

"Just getting in there and competing and battling. Just watching the puck. The team played great defensively, we limited them to less than twenty shots on net so that was nice, it made my job really easy tonight."

On the defensive effort:

"It was great. Our team was getting guys out of the way and making it real easy for me, letting me see the puck and also blocking shots a ton. Big points on the five-on-three when Warda blocked a shot. That was huge. That could've been the difference in the game."

On overtime:

"Just have fun. Not as nervous as I was before the first game. I just kinda settled down there and looked as overtime as just another period."

Forward Max Campbell:

On his game-winning goal:

"It was just a pass outside to Walters, just crashed the net and we knew we were going to get a greasy one if we were going to win it. It bounced right out to me and I threw it in the net."

On the difference in a winning effort tonight:

"I think we were more disciplined today as a team. We definitely need to lose the penalties. We controlled the puck better and our defense didn't turn the pucks over nearly as much as last night. It was just a better complete game from the team tonight."

"We were matched up with them quite a bit. We just thought play down to the man and then we wouldn't have to worry about those guys in our end."
