Volleyball Heads to In-State Conference Rivals this Weekend

THIS WEEK
The Western Michigan volleyball team continues a four-match Mid-American Conference road swing by facing both of its in-state rivals. The Broncos are in a four-way tie for first place in the MAC West and face one of the other co-leaders, Eastern Michigan (16-5, 3-1 MAC), on Friday at 7 p.m. The Broncos then head to Central Michigan (7-9, 1-3 MAC) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Live stats will be available for both matches and live streaming video is available for Saturday's match at Central Michigan for Bronco Insider subscribers.

LAST WEEK
The Broncos lost their first conference match of the season and first match this season to a team not in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 in a five set defeat at Northern Illinois.
Western Michigan bounced back on Saturday to earn a hard-fought three-set sweep of Bowling Green.

DASHING DOYLE
Senior outside hitter Allyson Doyle accounted for a kill on each of her first nine swings and finished with 14 kills and a career-high .684 attack percentage at IUPUI (9/4). That mark is the highest in the Mid-American Conference this season for a player with 12 kills or more.
Doyle is steadily moving up the WMU career charts in kills, digs and blocks. With three double-doubles this season, Doyle is second all-time with 38. She has moved into fourth in career digs (1,418) and seventh in career block assists (296).
Doyle surpassed 1,000 career kills against Seton Hall on Sept. 18 to become the 18th player in school history in that exclusive club. She is 16th all-time with 1,041 kills and she is only the 12th player in school history to record over 300 total blocks (310).
She continues to be an all-around force for WMU with 201 digs, 127 kills, 43 assists, 31 blocks and nine aces, while hitting .303.

VIOX TRUST
Viox is first in the MAC and ninth in Division I with 11.79 assists per set as WMU is hitting .236 as a team, which is second in the league and 65th in the country. She has increased her MAC-leading assists to 13.36 per set in conference play.
Five players have tallied 100 or more kills with Viox running the show.

BROWN DELIVERS
The reigning MAC Freshman of the Year, Brown is one of the most dynamic attacking players in the MAC. In all matches, she is third in the MAC in attack percentage (.355) and fourth in kills per set (3.55). In MAC play, Brown has increased her numbers to rank second in attack percentage (.443) and third in kills per set (4.43).

BEST IN THE MAC
Western Michigan is the top-ranked team in the MAC in the first official NCAA RPI (50), while also being first in the league in attack percentage (.281), kills (15.36 kps) and assists (14.93 aps) in conference matches. In all matches, WMU is first in assists (13.07 aps) and first in digs (17.91 dps), which is also ninth nationally.

QUALITY LOSSES
It takes a quality opponent to earn a victory against Western Michigan in 2010. The first four teams to defeat WMU were ranked third (Illinois), seventh (Nebraska), 20th (Dayton) and 26th (Ohio State) when they defeated the Broncos. WMU's other loss came to the team with the most overall wins in the league at the time (Northern Illinois)

SERIES RESULTS
The Broncos are 51-19 all-time against MAC West co-leader Eastern Michigan, including four wins in a row and wins in eight of the last nine meetings. The Broncos have won the last four meetings in Ypsilanti and are 18-10 all-time at EMU.
Western Michigan is 40-34 against Central Michigan, including three wins in a row. WMU won at CMU last season, 3-2, for the first time since 2005 and are 17-14 all-time in Mt. Pleasant.

LOWE'S SENIOR CLASS
Doyle is one of 30 volleyball players in NCAA Division I to be named a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
A 2009 First Team All-MAC honoree, she sports a 4.0 grade point average and is one of the Broncos' top representatives in the community. Doyle is a two-time Academic All-MAC honoree and first team Academic All-District nominee last season.

5-FOR-5
In 2009, her fifth season as head coach, Munson reached 20 wins for the fifth year in a row. The Broncos' 28 wins in 2008 were the most since the 1987 team finished 28-6 and continues a path that produced 21 wins in 2007, 21 in 2006 and 20 in 2005. This continues the longest streak of 20-win seasons since WMU had seven from 1981-87.
Munson has led the Broncos to a 125-58 record, five 20-win seasons, 2007, 2008 and 2009 MAC West championships and the 2008 MAC overall championship. Her .680 winning percentage is tops at WMU and her teams have finished second or better in the MAC West in every year of her tenure.
Munson joins Rob Buck (331), Cathy George (185) and Ruth Ann Meyers (115) as coaches with 100 wins at Western Michigan.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS
The Broncos have won the AVCA Team Academic Award three times (2005, 2008, 2009) under Munson. The team must compile a GPA of 3.3 or better during the academic year.
Munson's teams have also been recognized by the NCAA among the top-10 percent of volleyball programs in Academic Progress Rate (APR) in 2007 and 2008.
