KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan men's basketball team makes its second 2,000-plus mile trip to the West Coast this season when it travels to play at San Diego State on Saturday at 10:30 ET.
The Broncos (4-3) have won three of their last four games entering this contest against the Aztecs (6-1), who will be playing their second home game of the season.
WMU leads the all-time series, 2-1, after last season's victory at University Arena behind Andre Ricks' 29 points. The Broncos lost the only previous meeting in San Diego, 60-58, on Dec. 23, 1974.
There is a strong connection between these two programs that goes right to the head coach's chair at SDSU. Head coach Steve Fisher got his start in college coaching when former WMU head coach Les Wothke hired Fisher as an assistant coach for the Broncos on April 19, 1979, after eight years as head coach at Rich East High School in Park Forest, Ill.
Fisher was a member of Wothke's staff for all three seasons he was in Kalamazoo as the Broncos compiled a 42-41 record and tied for the 1981 MAC regular season championship with a 10-6 record. When Wothke took the head coaching job at Army after the 1981-82 season, Fisher was hired as an assistant coach at Michigan under Bill Frieder.
The game can be heard on the Bronco Radio Network with the pregame show at 10 p.m.
