AKRON, Ohio ? The Western Michigan men's basketball team hit an uncharacteristic cold spell and hit just 25.5% of its shots in a 69-36 loss at Akron on Saturday in front of 4,029 at Rhodes Arena.
WMU entered the game leading the Mid-American Conference in three-point shooting and second in field goal percentage in conference games, but struggled in this particular outing.
The Broncos (9-11, 4-3 MAC) played one of their best defensive halves of the season in the first half against the Zips (15-4, 6-1 MAC), but couldn't counter on the offensive end.
WMU held Akron to just 34.6% shooting and only 24 points, its second lowest scoring half of the season, in the opening period. However, the Broncos could only score 13 points on 17.9% shooting.
The Broncos hit their opening shot of the second half on a three-pointer by David Kool to pull within eight, 24-16, but Akron answered with an 18-5 run over 5:46 to go up 21, 42-21, with 13:25 to go in the game. WMU could only draw as close as 17 on a Derek Drews three-pointer with 11:56 remaining.
Shawntes Gary led the Broncos with eight points and two rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. Derek Fracalossi and Joe Reitz each added six points for the Brown & Gold. Reitz also had 11 rebounds.
Romeo Travis led Akron with 17 points.
The Broncos return to University Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to host the University at Buffalo.
