KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan suffered its first home shutout loss in falling to third-ranked Notre Dame, 3-0, Saturday before a sold out crowd of 3,944 at Lawson Arena and a Comcast Local viewing audience.
The Fighting Irish (20-5-1/14-3-1 CCHA) scored twice in a span of a minute, 47 seconds in the third period to seal the win. ND's Tom Sawatske, Brett Blatchford and Erik Condra provided goals while goaltender David Brown notched his third shutout of the season with a 25-save effort.
WMU was led offensively by Jeff LoVecchio, who placed a team-high seven shots on goal. UND finished with a 26-25 edge in shots as Daniel Bellissimo made 23 saves for the Broncos.
"It's awfully tough to sweep in the CCHA, and although we came up short tonight, I thought we battled hard," said coach Jim Culhane. "We'll take our two points from this weekend and get ready for Tuesday's game."
The Broncos (9-13-1/8-10-1 CCHA) play host to Ferris State (Jan. 23) and Alabama-Huntsville (Jan. 26-27) this week.
