KALAMAZOO, Mich. ? Western Michigan women's basketball opened Saturday's double-header at University Arena and the Mid-American Conference season with a 58-50 win over Central Michigan. It is the Broncos' 10th-straight victory over the Chippewas, dating back to 2001. The win also marked the second-consecutive year WMU opened the MAC slate with a win over its biggest rival.
Western Michigan (4-8, 1-0 MAC) used a pair of runs, one in each half, to secure its fourth victory of the season. With Central Michigan (9-3, 0-1 MAC) leading 15-11 with 7:32 remaining in the first half, Tiera DeLaHoussaye scored a fast break lay-up to pull to within a pair. Amanda Parker sunk a free-throw and hit the first of her three treys to put the Broncos up, 17-15, with 4:52 remaining in the half. When the dust had settled on the first stanza, WMU had finished the period on an 18-3 run and led, 29-18. Parker had 10 of her game-high 15 points in the first half, finishing 4-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
The Chippewas cut their deficit to five on three occasions but were never closer than when Latisha Luckett hit a pair of free throws at the 5:26 mark, chipping the Broncos' lead to three, 43-40. Casey Rost, who at that time was 1-for-10 from the floor, took over.
The senior nailed a pair of long range shots and another baseline jumper to push WMU's lead back to 11, 51-40, at the 3:07 mark. She, along with Carrie Moore, finished with 10 points to join Parker in double figures.
Despite shooting just 25.8 percent from the floor for the game, Central Michigan had a pair of players in double figures. Ann Skufca finished with 11 points (4-of-11) and Sharonda Hurd chipped in with 10 points (4-of-12).
The Broncos continue conference play when they host Ball State at University Arena on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
