BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Western Michigan University women's basketball team (7-11, 4-3 MAC) fell to Mid-American Conference leader Bowling Green (16-2, 7-0 MAC) (77-69) on Saturday afternoon in Anderson Arena.
The Broncos were headed by All-MAC standouts junior Carrie Moore and senior Casey Rost. Moore managed to score a game-high 28 points while pulling down seven boards. Rost added 17 points and had eight rebounds. Junior Lindsey Brown also scored double figures with 11 points.
On a day where junior Liz Honegger scored her 1,000th point for Bowling Green, the Brown & Gold played a tough ball game and held BGSU's star to only six points.
After a 17-17 tie with 9:36 remaining senior point guard Maria Jilian found Rost and Moore for back-to-back 3-point baskets to put WMU up by six (23-17) with 8:48 left in the half.
The Broncos biggest lead of the first period came with just under six minutes to play (28-20) off of a jumper from Moore. After that BGSU sparked an 8-0 run to tie the score at 30-30 at the 3:02 mark. The Falcons momentum carried them through the remainder of the half taking a 37-32 lead over the Broncos into the locker room.
In the start of the second half WMU had the ball and scored a jumper to cut BGSU's lead to three (37-34).
The Falcons remained in control of the ball game up until the closing minutes. BGSU led by 12 (66-54) with 7:25 remaining in the second half. But the Broncos weren't given up that easily as Rost and Jilian scored back-to-back 3-pointers to close the Falcons gap to six (66-60) at the six minute mark.
Jilian answered with a jumper to cut the Falcons lead to four (66-62) after a BGSU turnover. Moore's jumper at the 3:07 mark made it a 68-66 ball game.
The Falcons then went on an 8-0 run after that to seal their victory. A Moore lay-up with 10 seconds left ended the ball game.
WMU women's basketball continues MAC action when it travels to Akron on Jan. 31. The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
