KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Jan. 11) - Ball State staged a late comeback to hand Western Michigan its first league loss, 81-70, in a Mid-American Conference West Division match-up at University Arena.
Western Michigan (4-9, 1-1 MAC) led most of the contest - building a six-point lead at halftime (31-25) and increasing its advantage to 11 points (50-39) with 12:06 remaining.
Ball State (8-5, 1-1 MAC) rallied in the second half, staking its first lead at 4:41 on Tina Bolte's jumper. Her three-point bucket a minute later gave BSU the lead for good as Tracy Roller's squad finished with a 20-10 run. The Cardinals shot 64.3 percent from the field in the second half.
“Ball State came in with a purpose and played extremely well when the game was on the line” said Ron Stewart. “We broke down defensively and didn't make good decisions.”
Carrie Moore led the Broncos' offensively with 19 points, while clearing a team-high nine rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Casey Rost chipped in 16 points and Lindsey Brown added 13.
Bolte scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the second half, leading three Cardinals in double figures.
WMU hits the road Saturday, traveling to Eastern Michigan for a 5 p.m. tip-off at the Convocation Center.
