KALAMAZOO, Mich. – With the 2026 season concluding on Monday night, Western Michigan junior center fielder
Tanner Mally has officially won the NCAA Division I Baseball batting title with a .446 batting average. Mally becomes the second Bronco to ever win the nation's batting crown, joining Bill Guerrant, who led the way with a .467 mark back in 1965.
Mally has led all of NCAA Division I in batting average since early March, following a series at Akron during which he went 7-for-9 and reached base in 11-of-13 plate appearances. The Lisle, Ill., native set a WMU single-season program record with 87 hits and finished second nationally at 1.74 hits per game. He also ended up second in the nation in on-base percentage, setting another Western Michigan single-season record with a .554 mark.
The record-setting season has led to a litany of accolades for Mally, which includes being named an NCBWA Third Team All-American to become WMU's first All-American since 2017. He was also selected ABCA Midwest All-Region, All-MAC First Team, All-MAC Defensive Team, a Midseason All-American and was a semifinalist for the prestigious Dick Howser Trophy.
