KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan head men's basketball coach Kahil Fennell has announced another player following him from UTRGV, with the signing of point guard Jaylen Washington on Friday. Washington joins former UTRGV teammate Julien Gomez, who was Fennell's first signee for the Brown and Gold.
Washington spent each of his first two collegiate seasons with Fennell at UTRGV. This past season, he played in all 33 games for the Vaqueros and started 21 contests, helping the team to a 14-7 record in those games. The Dallas native shot 52.7 percent from the field, 31.4 percent on three-pointers and 84.6 percent from the free throw line on the way to 10.2 points per contest. He scored in double-figures 19 times, including in 12 of the season's final 13 games, and netted a career-high 26 points in a win at Nicholls.
One of the top distributors in the Southland Conference, Washington was sixth in the league at 4.2 assists per game and paced the conference with a 2.85 assist-to-turnover ratio, a mark which ranked 39th in all of NCAA Division I. He posted 4.7 assists per contest in SLC play, third-most in the league, and was atop the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.32 in Southland games. He also added season totals of 2.3 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. As a freshman, Washington made 22 appearances for the Vaqueros and collected 2.8 points, 2.1 assists and 1.5 rebounds per contest.
A three-star prospect, Washington was ranked as the No. 1 point guard and No. 19 overall player in Texas, as well as the No. 32 point guard in the nation by 247Sports. He finished his prep career with one season at Dynamic Prep in Irving, Texas, averaging 9.5 points, 7.5 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.8 steals per contest. He began his high school career at Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, where he totaled 16.5 points and 6.0 assists per game as a junior while leading the Wildcats to a 34-3 record and a 6A State Championship. He was also an All-District 7-6A honoree at Lake Highlands.
