CAMARILLO, Calif. – The Western Michigan women's golf team finished eighth after a near perfect third round at the Morehead State SoCal Spring Invitational.
The Broncos improved by three places as a team in the final round of the SoCal Spring Invitational on Tuesday, March 10. After back-to-back rounds at +20, WMU had its best overall round as a team in the third round on Tuesday. The Brown and Gold ended their last round and only four above par, led by sophomore Lauren Lupienk carding a 70 to go one under par.
The other three scoring rounds of the day for Western Michigan didn't rise more than two above par as freshman
Danielle Daniy carded a 72, and seniors
Megha Vallabhaneni and
Jenna Hayes each carded a 73. Across all three days the Broncos scored 304-306-288 to end the tournament at 898 (+46) for eighth overall. Nebraska was the tournament team winner with rounds of 295-283-284 for 862 (+10) while Alexsandra Lapple of Notre Dame was the individual winner at three under par.
Lupienk had the highest finish of the tournament for WMU, ending the three days at 13
th following rounds of 74-76-70 for a total of 220 (+7). Lupienk was the only member of the Brown and Gold to card a round under par over the three days. Vallabhaneni was Western Michigan's other finisher in the Top 25, placing 23
rd after carding rounds of 75-77-73 to be at 225 (+12).
Hayes placed 52
nd overall with rounds of 85-74-73, ending the tournament at 232(+19). Junior
Macy Beeson was right behind Hayes at 20 over par, carding rounds of 73-79-81 for 233. Of the Broncos team players, Daniy finished 64
th overall with rounds of 82-82-72 for 236 (+23). WMU also had one individual competing in the tournament in junior
Bella Brooks. Brooks ended her SoCal Invitational carding rounds of 83-77-81 for 241 (+28).
The Brown and Gold return to the course on Monday March 23 at the Bell Bank "Pay it Forward" Collegiate, hosted by Minnesota. The three round tournament will be held at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. over the course of two days.
