Bronco golf finishes 12th at Diane Thomason Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Western Michigan women's golf team placed 12th of 16 teams in its third tournament of the fall season.

After three rounds across two days, the Broncos shot 309-311-316 to end the Diane Thomason Invitational in 12th with a final score of 936. Senior Megha Vallabhaneni had another low round three, carding just two above par at 74 on Tuesday to lead WMU. Vallabheni ended the Invitational 26th individually with a score of 231 after carding rounds of 78-79-74.

On Monday morning junior Bella Brooks had the best first round at Finkbine Golf Course for Western Michigan. Brooks carded a 75 to place 22nd individually after the first 18-holes of the tournament. She was closely followed by the Brown and Gold's other three scoring players for the round in freshman Danielle Daniy with a 77, Vallabhaneni with a 78, and sophomore Lauren Lupinek with a 79.

But it was the freshman Daniy who ended the first day of the Invitational with the best combined score for WMU. Daniy carded only two strokes above par with a round of 76 to end the day tied for 20th in the individual leader board. As a team the Broncos finished 9th overall after 36-holes with a total of 620 with rounds of 309 and 311.

Following Dainy in the individual standings after the first two rounds of the tournament was Lupinek and Vallabhaneni as both ended the day at 13 above par. Lupinek shot 79-78 while Vallabhaneni carded 78-79 for the first two rounds to be tied for 42nd place. Rounding out the team scores for Western Michigan across the two rounds was Brooks with a second-round score of 84 to end the day at 15 above par to be tied for 53rd. Junior Macy Beeson contributed to the team score in the second round as she carded a 78, ending the first day at 18 above par.

On Tuesday during the final round of the Diane Thomason Invitational Vallabhaneni kept to her season trend of having her best score during the last round. The senior shot a 76 on Tuesday to jump up to 26th individually. Daniy finished second on the Brown and Gold roster with a final score of 234 to be tied for 37th on the individual leader board at 18 above par.

Lupinek finished the Invitational tied for 54th individually after carding an 81 in the third round to be 22 above par. Brooks was behind Lupinek by only a stroke at 23 above par to be tied for 64th individually. Beeson rounded out the WMU roster at the tournament tied for 79th after carding an 84 on Tuesday.

Host school Iowa won the team award at 25 above par with a total score of 889. The Hawkeyes shot 296-303-290 to take first place on the team leader board. Individually Montana State's Lauren Greeny was the only golfer to finish the tournament under par with a final score of 211. Greeny carded 64-75-72 to take the top spot in the individual leader board at five under par.

The Brown and Gold return home for their next tournament of the fall season. Western Michigan is hosting its annual WMU Bronco Fall Classic next week starting on Oct. 6 and ending on Oct. 7. The Broncos will hold their tournament at the Moors Golf Club in Portage for three rounds.
