Track and Field Gears Up for MAC Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- After a strong regular season filled with multiple PR's and top-10 marks, the Western Michigan track and field team will compete at the MAC Championships this weekend at Ohio University. The Broncos will be in action from May 15-17.

LAST YEAR'S EVENT
WMU collected its best finish since 2014 at last year's conference meet, securing fifth place. Along with that, the Brown and Gold's 78 points were the most for the team since 2012. The meet ended with two Broncos nabbing individual MAC Championships.

Mabinty Kebe headlined a strong weekend at Northern Illinois last season, winning the 400-meter hurdles by more than a second. She was the program's first champion in the event since Erin Dowd in 2019. She also recorded a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles to cap off a strong weekend. Kebe will once again compete for the Broncos this season.

Kayla Schiera was the other champion for the Broncos, winning the 3K steeplechase with a MAC record time. She won the race by more than 13 seconds. She also registered a fourth-place finish in the 5K. Schiera went on to finish her career as an All-American last season.

AMONG THE BEST IN THE CONFERENCE
Entering the conference meet, the Broncos will be among the favorites in a variety of events. That begins with the 10K, as Lillian Zelasko has the top time in the MAC so far this season. In the 3K steeplechase, Ava Kurczewski is fifth and Lily Overton is eighth.

Outside of that, Sandra Ferrari (First) and Mabinty Kebe (Sixth) are both top six in the 100-meter hurdles. Along with that, Kebe ranks first in the conference in the 400-meter hurdles and Ferrari is second in the long jump. Angel Pratt joins Kebe in the 400-meter hurdles, ranking fourth. WMU's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams are both seventh in the conference.

Throws wise, Bri'Yanna Robinson is top six in the shot put, hammer throw and discus. She ranks second in the shot put, third in the discus and sixth in the hammer throw. Tess Van Dyk is fourth in the shot put, while Lane Hagens checks in at fifth in the shout put and eighth in the discus.

GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM
The Broncos had another excellent semester in the classroom, posting a team Spring GPA of 3.58. That included eight athletes with a 4.00 GPA and 21 with a 3.50 or higher. The Brown and Gold also had 27 athletes with a 3.00 GPA or higher.

In terms of cumulative GPA, the Brown and Gold have six athletes with a 4.00 GPA, 22 with a 3.50 or higher and 30 with a 3.00 or higher. The program has earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors each year under head coach Kevin Cataldo
