KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) announced its All-Conference teams this afternoon, and Western Michigan was well represented. WMU secured four selections between the three teams.
Alex Bump was a unanimous All-NCHC First Team selection, while
Hampton Slukynsky (Second Team)
Joona Väisänen (Third Team) and
Cameron Rowe (Third Team) were also among the selections.
Bump led the conference in goals (15) and finished third in points (29) across 24 games. He is the fourth Bronco in program history to produce 29 or more points in an NCHC regular season, joining Jason Polin (29 in 2022-23), Drew Worrad (29 in 2021-22) and Chase Balisy (31 in 2013-14).
The Prior Lake, Minn. native had at least one point in 17 of the team's 24 conference games, including nine multi-point efforts. He opened conference play with a four-point weekend at Omaha, helping the Broncos go 2-0-0. He scored two goals and handed out two assists.
Following the holiday break, the Philadelphia Flyers draft pick went on a tear. In those 16 conference games, Bump recorded 23 points on 12 goals and 11 assists. He recorded two or more points in every series after the holiday break.
It all started at North Dakota, where he totaled five points on four goals and one assist in a sweep of the Fighting Hawks. He then put up five points the next weekend against Miami, scoring twice and dishing out three assists in another sweep.
Bump added another five points across four games against Colorado College and St. Cloud State. He then scored twice against Omaha to help the Broncos capture a home sweep. He also added a goal and an assist at Arizona State in late February.
During the last home series, Bump tallied a goal and an assist to secure the program's first ever Penrose Cup. He finished the regular season with a goal and an assist in a sweep at Miami. Bump has 38 points on 17 goals and 21 assists heading into the postseason.
Slukynsky was tremendous throughout the conference season. He was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie Team, which was announced yesterday. He finished NCHC play with a 10-3-1 record to go along with a 2.04 goals against average and .915 save percentage. His GAA was the best in the conference.
The Warroad, Minn. native opened his NCHC career by making 31 saves in a victory over Omaha. He didn't slow down from there, making 90 saves over the next three games to help the Broncos go into the holiday break with a 6-1-1 conference record.
He was just as good in the back half of the season, guiding the Broncos to their first ever Penrose Cup. He went 8-2-0, allowing three or fewer goals in eight games. He also recorded his first career shutout on Jan. 25 against Miami and made a career high 33 saves in a win over Arizona State on Feb. 22.
On the season, the Los Angeles Kings draft pick is 11-5-1 with a 2.04 GAA and .920 save percentage. He has allowed just 35 goals and has made 401 total saves.
Väisänen was one of the best defensemen in the league this season, leading all rookie blue liners in points with 17. He was named to the All-Rookie Team yesterday afternoon. He had three goals and 14 assists in 24 conference games. He led the league with a +17 rating, while adding 14 blocked shots.
The Finnish defenseman recorded three points in NCHC play prior to the holiday break, notching assists in three different games. In the back half of the season, Väisänen took his game to another level, producing 14 points on three goals and 11 assists.
In sweeps of North Dakota and Miami, the Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick had four assists, which included his first multi-point game. Later in the season, he tallied the first two-goal game of his career in a win over Omaha. That included the game-winning goal in overtime.
To end the season, Väisänen produced four points over his last four games, notching a goal and three assists to secure the program's first ever Penrose Cup.
In 34 games this season, he has totaled 22 points on four goals and 18 assists. Along with that, he is +18 and has 27 blocked shots.
Rowe was a brick wall in net throughout the 2024-25 conference season, producing a 9-1-0 record to go along with a 2.09 GAA and .925 save percentage. The Wilmette, Ill. native finished second in the league in both GAA and save percentage.
He opened the conference season with a dazzling 28-save performance in a win over Omaha, and he never looked back from there. He went on to stop 42 shots in a November win over Minnesota Duluth, pushing his record to 3-0-0 in league play.
Following that, he took down No. 2 Denver, stopping 29 shots in the winning effort. He posted another 29-save performance in a win over North Dakota after returning from the holiday break.
Rowe kept the momentum going, beating Miami and Colorado College in consecutive weeks. He made 44 saves between the two starts. He then collected his first shutout of the season, blanking St. Cloud State on Feb. 7.
He closed out the season by tallying 50 saves in games against Omaha and Arizona State. Overall, Rowe's numbers are incredible. He is 15-2-0 with a 2.00 GAA and .924 save percentage. He leads the NCAA in win percentage this season.
The Broncos will be back in action this weekend at Lawson Arena. WMU is hosting St. Cloud State in the NCHC Quarterfinals. Puck drop for Friday's series opener is set for 7 PM.
