YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Western Michigan gymnastics team posted the best team score in the Mid-American Conference so far this season after tallying a 196.500 to defeat Eastern Michigan and Wilberforce on Thursday at EMU.
The Broncos scored higher than a 49.00 in every event for the first time this season, led by a 49.200 on vault. The vault score was tied the second-highest mark in program history. WMU's success on bars continued with a 49.250, while the posting a season-best team score of 49.075 on beam. Western Michigan matched that score on floor.
Individually on vault, Broncos populated the top four scores led by
DonnaKathryn Roy's career-high of 9.875 in first place.
Brooke Gelesko,
Kennedy Cooper and
Halle Faulkner all tied for second with 9.850s. The scores were career-highs for both Gelesko and Cooper.
For the second-straight week,
Reilan Garvey claimed the bars title, this time sharing with teammate
Reese Samuelson. Both tied their career-highs with the scores. Senior
Molly Freeman tied her career-best score with a 9.850, taking second place.
The Broncos had a season-best score on beam, with four of the six competitors reaching scores of at least 9.800.
Hannah Milton posted the top score of 9.850 to take fourth, while Samuelson and
Sarah Moravansky had scores of 9.825.
Cassie St. Clair and Ally Schaup led the way on floor with scores of 9.850 to tie for third, while Garvey and Milton scored 9.800s.
For the second-straight week, Garvey posted a new career-high in the all-around. This time she scored a 39.250 to take second place.
Western Michigan returns home for a quad meet against Central Michigan, Illinois and Wilberforce on Saturday, March 8 at 4 p.m.
