KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- For the final time this season, the Mid-American Conference handed out its weekly women's soccer awards, with
Heidi Thomasma earning the league's Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Thomasma spearheaded a strong defensive effort in the final regular season game of the season, limiting Buffalo to zero goals and just three shots on goal. The Bulls entered the game averaging more than 13 shots per game. The shutout was WMU's eighth of the season.
The Grand Rapids, Mich. native has played every minute of every game on the back line for the Brown and Gold. She has four points on two goals. Western Michigan was the best defensive team in the MAC, limiting opponents to just eight goals the entire league season.
Thomasma and the Broncos open postseason play on Tuesday, Nov. 4 against the winner of Kent State and Ball State. WMU has played Kent State in the semifinals in each of the last two tournaments. The Broncos will hit the field at 4 PM at the Columbus Crew Stadium.
