KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- After an incredible season, the awards keep rolling in for the Western Michigan women's soccer team. The United Soccer Coaches announced its annual All-Region Teams, with four Broncos earning the prestigious honor.
Drew Martin,
Mira Pierre-Webster,
Abby Smothers and
Heidi Thomasma were selected to the All-Region Teams and have a chance at earning All-American status. The All-American list will be released on Friday, Dec. 5.
Martin was a Second Team honoree, finishing the year with 23 points on five goals and 13 assists. She was named the Mid-American Conference Midfielder of the Year and broke the program's single-season record for assists. She set career highs in goals, points and assists this season.
Pierre-Webster joined Martin on the Second Team, spearheading one of the best defensive units in the nation. She was selected as the MAC Defensive Player of the year for the second time in her career. The Canadian defender was also great on offense, securing four points on one goal and two assists this season.
Smothers put together an impressive offensive season, which led to her being named to the Third Team. This is the second consecutive year for Smothers on the All-Region Team. The Livonia, Mich. native was a First Team All-MAC honoree and finished the season with a team-high 27 points on 11 goals and five assists. She is the program's career leader in points.
Thomasma was a Fourth Team honoree, earning All-Region honors for the second consecutive season. Like Pierre-Webster, Thomasma was a mainstay on the back end for the Brown and Gold. She was named Second Team All-MAC and was the MAC Tournament MVP. The Grand Rapids, Mich. native was also strong on offense, providing three goals this season.
WMU finished the season with a 16-4-1 overall record and 10-1-1 conference mark. The Broncos have won the MAC Regular Season title three years in a row and have won the MAC Tournament in back-to-back seasons. Western Michigan is 26-1-7 in MAC play over the last three years.
