EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Western Michigan gymnastics team opened the 2025 season with a 196.850-194.675 loss at No. 11 Michigan State on Saturday afternoon.
WMU's top individual performance came from sophomore Emily Krzciok, who won on beam with a career-high score of 9.900 on the team's final event of the day. Prior to the meet, Krzciok had only officially competed once officially in her career, last season against Eastern Michigan. Senior Ally Schaupp posted a 9.750, while freshman Reilan Garvey closed out her first collegiate meet with a 9.650.
Garvey was WMU's lone competitor in the All-Around, with a score of 38.850.
As a team, the Broncos' top event was on bars. Five gymnasts posted scores of at least 9.700 to finish with a combined score of 48.750 to open the meet. Reese Samuelson posted a career-high score of 9.800 to tie for fourth. Like her classmate Krzciok, Samuelson had also competed just once before this season's opener. Finishing close behind Samuelson was Molly Freeman, with a 9.775. Fifth-year senior Sarah Moravansky had a 9.750, while Garvey posted a 9.725 in her first collegiate event. Julie Korfhage rounded out WMU's top five with a 9.700.
On vault, Western Michigan posted its second-best event score of 48.700. Senior Halle Faulkner led the way for WMU with a 9.825. Cassie St. Clair had a score of 9.775, while Garvey had a 9.725 and Moravansky with a 9.700. DonnaKathryn Roy rounded out the team's five scorers with a 9.675.
St. Clair led the way for WMU on floor, tying for second place with a 9.850 as the Broncos posted a 48.625. Schaupp finished just behind her with a 9.825, while Roy had a 9.775, Garvey finished with a 9.725 and Julie Korfhage posted a 9.450.
Up next for the Broncos is the Podium Challenge, hosted by Next Level Gymnastics at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich on Saturday, Jan. 11. WMU competes against Illinois State, George Washington and Pitt at 7 p.m.
