KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team will split up this weekend for a pair of meets in Indiana. The squad will be competing on Friday at the Gerry England Invitational, hosted by the University of Indianapolis. On Saturday, the team will take part in the Hoosier Horsepower Classic, taking place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
ROBINSON CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
After having a strong 2023-24 season,
Bri'Yanna Robinson has not taken a step back in 2024-25. The veteran thrower had an impressive pair of performances at last week's John Flaminio Classic.
Robinson first won the weight throw with a mark of 15.99 meters. She then went on to win the shot put with a throw of 13.93 meters. Robinson is the school's record holder in the shot put and is ninth all-time in the weight throw.
RETURNING TALENT
The Broncos have a wealth of talent returning from last year's team, but
Sandra Ferrari,
Mabinty Kebe,
Bri'Yanna Robinson and
Lillian Zelasko highlight the group of returners. Ferrari was a First Team All-MAC honoree and was named the MAC Freshman Field Performer of the Year at last year's Indoor MAC Championships. She won the 60-meter hurdles and finished second in the long jump at the meet. She was also an NCAA Regional qualifier during outdoor season.
Kebe was a Second Team All-MAC honoree, as she finished as the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles at the MAC Championships. Kebe was also an NCAA Regional qualifier in outdoor season. Robinson returns for another season after rewriting the record book last year. She owns the program record for shot put in indoor and outdoor.
Zelasko was a standout distance runner, competing at the USATF U20 Championships as a freshman last season. She also posted a career-best 10K time of 35:33.48 at the MAC Championships. She was Second Team All-MAC and an All-Region honoree in cross country this season.
SOME OF THE BEST IN THE REGION
Though its early in the season, WMU has a few athletes that are among the best in the region in their events. Throws wise,
Tess Van Dyk is ninth in the shot put with a top mark of 14.79 meters. Behind her,
Bri'Yanna Robinson is 22nd with a throw of 13.93 meters. Robinson is also 24th in the weight throw with a mark of 17.10 meters.
Mabinty Kebe has been strong early on this season, sitting at 22nd in the region in the 60-meter hurdles. She has a top time of 8.75. Distance wise,
Rebekah Asselin is 13th in the 800-meter run. Her top time is 2:16.47.
