KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The San Jose Barracuda, top affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, and General Manager Joe Will announced today that the team has signed forward
Luke Grainger to an amateur tryout agreement.
Grainger ends his Bronco career as one of the most decorated student-athletes in program history. Over his four years in the Brown and Gold, he totaled 103 points on 38 goals and 65 assists. He played in 140 career games and became the 61st player in program history to record 100 career points.
The Montreal, Quebec native had a career senior season, leading the team in points and assists. He finished the 2023-24 campaign with 48 points on 14 goals and 34 assists. That led to him earning All-NCHC Second Team honors. He was also a Hobey Baker nominee.
The Broncos' captain had a knack for making big plays throughout his career. One of the biggest plays in his career came back in the 2021-22 season when he scored in overtime to secure the program's first ever NCAA Tournament victory. He also had a six-point game during the 2022-23 season, which hadn't been done by a Bronco since 2000.
Not only was Grainger a great player on the ice, but he also took his academics very seriously. Over the course of his career, he was a four-time NCHC Distinguished Scholar Athlete. His academic career culminated at the 2024 NCHC Awards Banquet when he was named the league's Senior Scholar Athlete. He carries a 3.71 GPA in finance.
Over his four-year career, Grainger and the Broncos won 80 overall games and posted 50 victories in conference play. Furthermore, Grainger helped the program reach three consecutive NCAA Tournaments for the first time in program history. Lastly, Grainger played a pivotal role in the program having three straight seasons with more than 20 wins. Prior to the last three seasons, that hadn't happened since 1985-88.
"It's been an incredible four years here at WMU, and committing to play here in front the best fans in college hockey was the best decision I have ever made," Grainger said. "I can't thank my teammates and especially the coaching staff enough for all the help and support throughout the years, which has allowed me to grow as a player and person. It's been an absolute honor to be a part of the Bronco Hockey family, and I am so excited to see the future for this program."
