KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan gymnastics team narrowly edged Ball State, 196.025-195.950, on Saturday afternoon at University Arena to become the lone undefeated team in Mid-American Conference competition.
Sarah Moravansky and Payton Murphy picked up individual event wins. Moravansky had a career-best performance on vault with a 9.900 to take first. Murphy tied with BSU's Zoe Middleton with a 9.900 on floor.
The Broncos were strong out of the gate, turning in a team score of 49.175 on vault. Freshman Hannah Milton started the meet off with a career-high score of 9.825. Abby Singh had a 9.825, along with Halle Faulkner.
Ball State had a razor-thin margin heading into the final rotation. The Broncos were on floor and the Cardinals on beam. After strong performances by both teams, it came down to the final competitor for Western Michigan. After Murphy turned in her 9.900 performance, WMU needed a score of 9.800 or higher out of junior Ally Schaupp to overcome BSU. Schaupp earned a 9.850 for her performance, putting Western Michigan over the top for the meet victory.
Moravansky had a strong overall performance on the day. After her win on vault she also took third on beam after a 9.850.
Western Michigan heads to Illinois State next Friday to take on the RedBirds and Alaska Anchorage at 8 p.m. ET.
