WMU Baseball Set for Home-and-Home Against EMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan baseball team is set to take on Eastern Michigan in a non-conference home-and-home series this week. The Broncos welcome the Eagles to Kalamazoo on Tuesday afternoon, and then head to Ypsilanti for the rematch on Wednesday evening.

HOME-AND-HOME
After picking up its second MAC series victory of the season over the weekend, Western Michigan has a home-and-home series against Eastern Michigan this week. The Broncos and Eagles meet in Kalamazoo on Tuesday afternoon, and then again in Ypsilanti on Wednesday evening. This week's contests will be non-conference affairs. 

WMU VS EMU
Western Michigan holds a 97-93 edge in the all-time series against Eastern Michigan. The Eagles took two out of the three in the conference series between these two last month, which was relocated to the campus of Western Kentucky due to forecasted weather in Kalamazoo. The last time EMU came to Kalamazoo was in late March of 2021. That weekend, the two teams split a four-game set. 

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Eastern Michigan dropped two out of three in hits home series against Miami over the weekend in Ypsilanti. The Eagles avoided the sweep with an 8-1 victory on Sunday. EMU's duo of Josh Kross (.351) and Matt Kirk (.343) rank inside the top-10 in the conference in batting average. The reigning MAC Player of the Year, Kirk is the conference leader and ranks 17th nationally in doubles with 14.

LAST TIME OUT
WMU is coming off of its second straight MAC series victory, as it took two out of three against Akron over the weekend. The Broncos rolled to a 14-5 game one victory, fell a run short on Saturday, but then bounced back to take the rubber match, 12-7, on the strength of three home runs.

LOOK AT MEE
Freshman Grady Mee had a breakout performance for the Broncos last week, and was rewarded with WMU's second straight MAC Co-Player of the Week, as well as being named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week, Powered by Diamond. Mee did most of his damage over the weekend against Akron, going six-for-12 in the series with eight runs scored and seven RBIs. The freshman also blasted a home run in each game of the series, the first three long balls of his collegiate career. 

MILLER MOWS 'EM DOWN
Brady Miller turned in another strong outing for WMU in Friday's series opener against the Zips. The righty limited the visitors to two runs on five hits over six innings and rang up 10 strikeouts. It was the second straight 10-strikeout performance for Miller, which matched his career high. In four MAC starts, Miller is 3-1 with a 3.60 ERA and has 33 strikeouts in 25.0 innings (11.9 K/9).

JACKSON IS COOKING
Jackson Kitchen was sizzling over the weekend against Akron, as he went 7-for-13 (.538) with a pair of doubles, a home run, four runs scored and five RBIs. The junior had multiple hits in each game of the series to extend his on-base streak to 25 games, the longest by a Bronco this season. 

MASHING MORRISON
Will Morrison leads Western Michigan in several offensive categories, including batting average (.353), on-base percentage (.455), hits (36) and runs (26). He enters the week fifth in the MAC in batting average.

GETTING DEFENSIVE
The Western Michigan defense has turned 28 double plays this season, the most in the MAC and 16th-most in the country. 

BRONCO BULLPEN
The WMU bullpen was strong over the weekend against Akron, limiting the Zips to four earned runs over its 14.0 innings of work (2.57 ERA). In Sunday's series finale, the trio of Jake Gernon, Joe Shapiro and Nick Crandell yielded just one earned run and picked up eight strikeouts in eight innings.
