PITTSBURGH – The Western Michigan gymnastics team finished in third place during session one of the NCAA Regional Semifinals at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday afternoon.
WMU finished with a score of 196.175. No. 7 Cal finished in first with a 197.250, with No. 10 Michigan State finishing with a score of 196.825. The Golden Bears and the Spartans advanced to Sunday's NCAA Regional Finals. West Virginia finished in fourth place with a score of 195.850.
Western Michigan's best event of the day was the vault. The Broncos finished with the top team score in the vent, a 49.100. The event was led by sophomore Cassie St. Clair, who tied for first place in the field with a 9.900. Sarah Moravansky and Halle Faulkner each had 9.825's, while Payton Murphy had a 9.800.
On beam, Murphy and Amanda Gruber each scored a 9.900, tying for second place. Sophomore Gigi Singh matched her career high with a 9.825.
WMU had a 49.400 on floor, with Murphy leading the way with a score of 9.925. Ronni Binstock finished with a 9.90, while Donnakathryn Roy and St. Clair each had a 9.875. Dani Petrousek had a 9.825 and Moravansky finished with a 9.800.
Murphy led the Broncos on bars with a 9.825 and finished in third place in the all-around with a 39.450.
Murphy, Gruber and St. Clair must watch results from around the country to see if they can advance to the NCAA Championships in their respected events.
