ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Western Michigan gymnastics team opened its preseason going 2-1 at the University of Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos turned in a score of 195.525, defeating Central Michigan (195.450) and Eastern Michigan (194.325). The Wolverines posted the top team score of the group, a 197.100.
"I thought our team performed really well, especially considering it's a month early for us" said head coach Penny Jernigan. WMU's score was the highest it has turned in during a December exhibition meet.
The top individual finish came from fifth-year senior Amanda Gruber on beam. Gruber tied for first place with UM's Sierra Brooks with a score of 9.950. Payton Murphy was WMU's top finisher on vault with a 9.825, while also posting strong performances on floor and beam.
Cassie St. Clair tied for fifth on floor, with a team-high score of 9.875, while Sarah Moravansky tied for second place on bars with a 9.850.
WMU freshmen Hannah Milton and Reese Samuelson also saw action. Milton competed on vault and beam, while Samuelson competed on bars and beam.
The Broncos continue preseason next Saturday down in Paradise Island, Bahamas at the Atlantis Crown International Exhibition.
