KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball program and head coach
Dwayne Stephens have announced the signing of former Michigan Mr. Basketball Chansey Willis Jr. A Detroit native, Willis will have two years of eligibility remaining when he joins the Broncos for the 2024-25 season.
"We are looking forward to Chansey getting to Kalamazoo," coach Stephens said. "He is a very talented player, who can score the ball and does a great job of making his teammates better. He is a great teammate and works extremely hard. Chansey's leadership ability will be a great addition to our program and the community."
Willis is suiting up for Henry Ford Community college this season after spending his freshman campaign at Saginaw Valley State. In his one year with the Cardinals, the guard averaged 12.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, and ranked third in the GLIAC at 4.8 assists per contest. He was also fifth in the league with a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio.
He scored in double-figures 12 times for SVSU, including each of the last seven games of the season. In a late-season win over Grand Valley State, Willis tallied a career-high 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.
At Detroit King High School, Willis was a two-sport star, lettering in both basketball and football. He nearly averaged a triple-double as a senior, posting 24 points, 10 rebounds and 9.5 assists per game. Willis racked up the accolades that season, as he was named 2022 Michigan Mr. Basketball, Michigan's 2022 Gatorade Player of the Year, AP Division I Michigan Player of the Year and earned a First Team All-State selection.
