YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team sits in third place after the opening two rounds of the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational at Eagle Crest Golf Club on Monday.
The Broncos opened with a 303 and then came back in the second round with the third-lowest single team round in program history, a 288. It's the second time WMU has a shot a sub-290 round so far this season. The combined 591 has the Broncos at +15, four shots ahead of host Eastern Michigan and Purdue Fort Wayne. Oakland and Bowling Green are tied for the lead at 579 (+3).
Graduate student Natalie Samdal was the Broncos' top finisher on the day, opening with a 75 and then shooting a 71 to sit tied for sixth place with a 146 (+2). Sophomore Jenna Hayes sits just two shots behind her after shooting a 76 and a 72. Sophomore Megha Vallabhaneni and graduate student Alissa Fish each shot a 151 (+7), while freshman Macy Beeson rounded out the team's top five with a 154 (+10).
As a team, the Broncos led the field with 33 birdies in the first two rounds, with Samdal and Hayes each with eight.
