ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Western Michigan gymnastics team kicked off the 2022-23 season with a third-place finish in an exhibition meet at the University of Michigan on Saturday.
The Broncos finished with a final score of 193.550, finishing behind Central Michigan (195.875) and the Wolverines (196.400). WMU finished ahead of Eastern Michigan, who scored a 190.200.
WMU's highest scores came on the bars with a 48.600. Senior Payton Murphy had the team's highest score in the vent with a 9.825. Murphy also scored a 9.800 on beam, matching teammate Amanda Gruber and tying for fourth overall. Murphy went on to finish fourth in the all-around with a 39.025.
Cassie St. Clair had WMU's top score on the floor at 9.750 and on vault, also with a 9.750.
Western Michigan officially opens the season on Sunday, Jan. 8 when it hosts UW-Oshkosh and Illinois State at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
