KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In its first home game under new head coach
Dwayne Stephens, the Western Michigan men's basketball team knocked off Kalamazoo College, 82-59, in exhibition action on Wednesday evening at University Arena.
The Broncos came out of the gates quickly, as they raced out to a 16-4 advantage in the opening six minutes of the contest. Kalamazoo College trimmed the deficit to 10, 20-10, but Western Michigan responded with a 17-0 run to boost its lead to 37-20. During the surge, WMU held the Hornets without a point for more than five minutes. Kalamazoo chipped away at the margin in the latter stages of the first half, and the Broncos were up 49-28 heading into halftime.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Kalamazoo College worked its way back to within 13, 50-37, which is as close as the visitors got in the final 30 minutes of the contest. With WMU on top 60-46, the Broncos reeled off 13 consecutive points to extend the lead to 27, 73-46. Western Michigan's advantage stayed above 20 for the remainder of the evening.
The Broncos begin the 2022-23 regular season on Monday, Nov. 7, with a trip to Minnesota to battle the Golden Gophers at 9 pm.
