KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan gymnastics team and head coach Penny Jernigan have announced the schedule for the upcoming 2023 season.
The schedule features four home meets with the first as the season-opener against Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Illinois State on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. Western Michigan welcomes Eastern Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. and then host Central Michigan the following Sunday at 1 p.m. for Alumni Day. The final home meet for the Broncos is on Saturday, Mar. 4 at 4 p.m. against Northern Illinois for Senior Day. Admission to all home WMU gymnastics meet is free.
"We are especially excited to have multiple out of conference meets this year," said Jernigan. "Our NCAA post-season championships are typically hosted by universities outside the Mid-American Conference. When we were constructing the 2023 schedule we knew it would be important for our gymnasts to gain experience competing on the road under similar circumstances. This year's team is primed for the challenge and we can't wait to get them out there."
Prior to the season-opener, the Broncos head to the University of Michigan for an exhibition meet on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 4 p.m. After competing against the Titans and the Red Birds, the Broncos head on the road for four straight meets. WMU and ISU meet again a week later on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 3 p.m. in Normal, Ill. From there, Western Michigan heads to Bowling Green to take on the Falcons on Friday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m., to Kent State to compete against the Golden Flashes on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. and then a meet against N.C. State and North Carolina in Raleigh, N.C.
The Broncos also head to out Washington D.C. for a meet against George Washington at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24. Western Michigan closes out the regular season on the road at Ball State on Sunday, March 12 at 1 p.m.
This year's Mid-American Conference Championship takes place on Saturday, March 18 at Kent State at 2 p.m. The NCAA Regional Championships are slated to take place from March 31-April 2.
