YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team sits tied for sixth place after the first two rounds at the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational at Eagle Crest Golf Course on Monday.
The Broncos combined for an opening round of 309 and followed it up with a 311 for a 36-hole total of 620 (+44) to tie with Green Bay. Central Michigan leads the tournament with a 597 (+21) and are followed by Bowling Green, Oakland, Loyola and Eastern Michigan. The Broncos sit just three shots out of fourth place.
Freshman Jenna Hayes was WMU's top performer on the day. She opened with a 78 and shaved two strokes off for her second round with a 76 for a total of 154 (+10). Hayes sits in a four-way tie for 13th and is just three strokes outside the top 10.
Natalie Samdal shot a 155 (+11), while defending champion Alissa Fish sits right behind her with a 156 (+12). Freshman Megha Vallabhaneni shot a 158 (+13), while Ally Barth rounded out the Broncos' field of five with a 163 (+19).
Vallabhaneni led the team with 24 pars, while Samdal and Hayes were tied with the team lead in birdies with six.
