AUSTIN, Texas – Western Michigan men's tennis fifth-year senior
Jannik Opitz has added to his legacy, becoming the first male student-athlete in WMU history to become a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American. Opitz was named First Team At-Large Academic All-American on Friday afternoon.
The Hildesheim, Germany currently boasts a 4.00 GPA in the applied statistics graduate degree program. This season he helped lead the Broncos to the program's 26th Mid-American Conference Regular Season Championship. Opitz was named First Team All-MAC and the MAC Player of the Year, in addition to being an Academic All-MAC selection and an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athlete.
"Jannik has been that once in a generation student-athlete possessing a rare combination of athletic talent, intelligence and maturity to go with a pursuit of excellence both in the classroom and on the court," said head coach
Dave Morin. "We knew he was special when we recruited him, but he clearly has established himself as the greatest men's tennis player to ever don the Brown & Gold and we are extremely proud of him.
He earned First Team Academic All-American honors last year and second team honors in 2019. Opitz recently wrapped up his career as the winningest athlete all-time in the history of the program with records in overall wins, doubles wins and singles wins.
He joins Kayla Skelly-Lankord as now one of just two student-athletes in the history of WMU Athletics to be named a three-time Academic All-American. Skelly-Lankford earned the honors in 1984, 1985 and 1986 with spots on the second team in 84 and 85 and a first team selection in 86.
