Men's Tennis Hosts Three Matches in Three Days

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team hosts three matches in three days beginning on Friday with Ball State at 2 p.m. The Broncos also host Omaha on Saturday at 12 p.m. and Toledo on Sunday at 2 p.m.
 
Prior to Saturday's match the Broncos will take time to honor seniors Zac Faveri and Jannik Opitz.
 
Western Michigan maintains a slim lead at the top of the Mid-American Conference standings with a 6-0 record in conference play. Northern Illinois is in second place at 5-1 and the Cardinals come to Kalamazoo in third place at 4-2. Last week WMU went on the road and defeated Buffalo, 5-2. The team also had a road match scheduled against Binghamton but it was canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the Cougars' program.
 
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Ball State is 5-0 since losing back-to-back matches against WMU and NIU and defeated Toledo 4-3 last Saturday.

Sajin Smith leads the team with 15 singles wins and a 15-3 overall record. Most of his wins have come at No. 4 where he is 9-1. Eli Herran is 15-1 on the season with a 9-1 record at No. 5 and a 5-0 record at No. 6. Thibault De Negri is 12-5 on the season and is the reigning MAC Singles Player of the Week. De Negri is 6-4 at No. 1 and 6-1 at No. 2. The pairing of DeNegri and Parish Simmons is 8-5 on the season, all at No. 2.
 
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
Saturday's match will be the first in program history between the Broncos and the Mavericks. Omaha has won its last four matches and heads to take on DePaul on Friday before making the trip to Kalamazoo on Saturday.
 
Both Matt Hulme and Abdoul Ouattara have a team-high 11 wins in singles play. Ouattara is 11-6 overall with a 7-5 record at No. 1 and 4-1 at No. 2. Hulme has also split time at 1 and 2 with records of 5-4 and 6-4 for an 11-8 mark overall. The two have paired up for a team-best 14-3 record in doubles play, all at No. 1.
 
SCOUTING THE ROCKETS
Toledo is just 2-5 in conference play this season and heads to NIU on Friday before coming to WMU on Sunday.
 
Thawin Suksathaporn and Krzysztof Wetoszka each have a team-high eight wins in singles play. Suksathaporn is 8-4 overall with a 1-0 record at No. 1, 4-2 at No. 2 and 3-2 at No. 3. Wetoszka is 2-3 at No. 2 and 6-0 at No. 3. Wetoszka and Cole Shoults are 4-1 in doubles play on the season, all coming at No. 1.
 
ON THE HORIZON
Western Michigan racks up the regular season hosting Northern Illinois on Saturday at 2 p.m.
