KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team improved to 10-1 on the season after a tough, 7-0, win over Drake on Saturday afternoon at West Hills Athletic Club.
Although it was the team's eighth victory by a 7-0 margin this season, three of the singles matches were pushed to three sets and the doubles point went down to the wire. The victory was also the first in program history over Drake after previously going 0-8 against the Bulldogs.
In doubles play
Peter Kuszynski and
Joaquin Caballer opened the match with a 6-2 win at No. 3. The Bulldogs tied it up at 1-1 after Matija Metic and Markus Bolin defeated
Jannik Opitz and
Zac Faveri 6-2 at No. 2. WMU's No. 1 pair of
Arjun Honnappa and
Fynn Lohse sealed the doubles point after defeating Oliver Johansson and Benedek Herman 6-4.
Freshman
Jackson Boone picked up WMU's first point in singles after winning at No. 4 over Bolin 6-1, 6-1. Honnappa made it 3-0 after winning over Metic at No. 5, 6-3, 6-0. Opitz won in two sets but had to go to tie breakers for both at No. 1 against Johasson. He won the first set 7-5 (7-5) and followed it up with a 7-6 (7-4) win to put the Broncos up 4-0 and secure the team win.
Peter Kuszynski went to three sets against Herman. He dropped the first set 4-6 but rallied to win the next two 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2. Freshman
Brogan Pierce went to three sets with Freddie Powell, winning the first 6-4 but falling 5-7 before rebounding to win the final set 6-4. Lohse completed the 7-0 score line at No. 3 with a tight win over Evan Fragistas 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 7-6 (9-7).
The Broncos are back at it once again on Sunday when they host Youngstown State at 1 p.m.
