KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan volleyball senior outside hitter
Rachel Bontrager has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Bontrager last week helped the Broncos secured a 3-0 week with two wins over Buffalo and a win over Ball State. Earlier this week Bontrager for her efforts was named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week.
The senior outside hitter led WMU with 58 kills, averaging 5.27 kills per set. Bontrager in three matches hit .326 and recorded 5.73 points per game while having 1.73 digs and 0.64 blocks per set.
Last Thursday in a five-set victory over Buffalo, Bontrager had a career-high 30 kills to go along with 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. The Valparaiso, Ind., native's 30 kills were the fifth most in a five-set match in school history and the first 30-kill performance since 2005.
Bontrager is just 18 kills away from becoming the third player in school history to eclipse 1,500 career kills. The senior outside hitter also needs just 53 digs to have 1,000 for her career. Bontrager can became the only player in school history to have 1,500 career kills and 1,000 career digs. Â
Away from the court Bontrager is a two-time Academic All-MAC selection and holds a 3.71 cumulative grade point average in Elementary Professional Education.
