KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team has a busy week ahead with home matches against Chicago State on Thursday at 2 p.m. and Illinois-Chicago on Friday at 5 p.m. before traveling to Notre Dame on Saturday.
WMU is 5-0 heading into the three-match stretch.
THE MACHUPS
WMU is 12-0 all-time against Chicago State, 28-0 against Illinois-Chicago and 24-41 against Notre Dame.
Thursday's match is the first of the season for CSU. UIC is 0-2 on the season but has also had two matches canceled. The Flames fell at DePaul 7-0 last Friday and then 6-1 at home against Illinois State on Saturday.
The Fighting Irish are 4-3 on the season, including 4-1 at home. UND has two wins over ISU, a split with Ball State and a win over Cleveland State. Recently they fell to nationally-ranked Tennessee and Kentucky, both 7-0.
CLEAN SWEEP
The Broncos swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards this week. Seniors
Jannik Opitz and
Zac Faveri were named MAC Men's Doubles Team of the Week and Opitz earned MAC Men's Singles Player of the week. It's the second straight week the Broncos have had the Doubles Team of the Week. Last week it was sophomore
Arjun Honnappa and
Fynn Lohse.
DOUBLES DOMINATION
Through WMU's first five matches, the Broncos have yet to drop the doubles point. The Broncos have used five different doubles teams, combining to go 12-3 on the season. Seniors
Zac Faveri and
Jannik Opitz are 5-0 on the season and
Peter Kuszynski and
Brogan Pierce are 1-0 as WMU's only two undefeated duos.
GETTING CLOSER
Senior
Jannik Opitz is now six wins away from tying the all-time record for wins at Western Michigan University. He is also closing in on another program record. The Hildesheim, Germany native needs just five more doubles wins to tie that program record as well. Opitz is 5-0 in doubles play this season and 4-0 in singles.
ON THE HORIZON
The Broncos take next week off before welcoming Wayne State on Wednesday, Feb. 24 for a double-header and then hosting Butler on Friday, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. and again on Saturday at 10 a.m.
