KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team took care of business in an exhibition matchup this afternoon (Oct. 31) against the visiting Goshen Maple Leafs, winning by a 77-53 margin inside University Arena.
The Broncos hounded the Maple Leafs defensively all afternoon, forcing a total of 30 turnovers while committing nine as a team. WMU capitalized on those forced turnovers, scoring 29 of their 77 as a result of Goshen miscues. The Broncos also finished with 17 steals in the contest as a team.
Sophomore forward Taylor Williams led the way for the Broncos, putting up 22 points, 13 rebounds, and five steals in 21 minutes of play. Williams found success in the third quarter on Sunday, scoring 13 of her 22 and snatching four rebounds during that 10 minutes.
Sophomore guard
Megan Wagner and senior guard
Maddie Watters each added 10 points to their team's effort as well. Wagner was a catalyst for the Broncos on Sunday, adding three assists and three rebounds while finishing with an efficient +/- of 19.
Goshen started strong on Sunday, jetting out to an early 15-14 edge at the end of the first. WMU battled in the second and never looked back. The Broncos created a 32-24 lead for themselves going into the locker room at half off of an 8-0 run to end the second quarter. Western Michigan's lead grew in each of the remaining two quarters, allowing them to seal the win.
Second chance points were also a big factor in the outcome, with WMU scoring 19 off of their own misses. Bench play was an additional threat, as the Bronco reserves added 32 points to their team's winning campaign.
Western Michigan begins regular season play next Wednesday, Nov. 9 against Kentucky State for a 12 p.m. matchup inside University Arena.
