KALAMAZOO, Mich. – After wrapping up the regular season Saturday against Ball State, the Western Michigan women's basketball team received the No. 5 seed in the 2020 Mid-American Conference Championship. The Broncos (17-12, 10-8 MAC) will host 12th-seeded Bowling Green (10-20, 3-15 MAC) at 7 p.m. Monday inside University Arena in the opening round. If WMU wins, it will advance to Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio.
This season, Western Michigan split with the Falcons, dropping a 72-63 decision in Bowling Green before rebounding with a 69-55 victory inside University Arena. Redshirt senior Breanna Mobley has excelled in the two matchups with 40 points, 21 rebounds and three steals. Redshirt sophomore Jordan Walker contributed 27 points, nine rebounds and three steals. In the second meeting, the Broncos committed a season-low five turnovers.
WMU has been led this season by Walker's 15.8 points per game, good for eighth in the league, and her 59 three pointers made. Mobley is close behind with 13.9 points per game and paces the conference with 10.8 rebounds per game. Graduate student Chelayne Bailey tops the team with 97 assists while junior Leighah-Amori Wool leads the Broncos in free-throw percentage, hitting 81.8 percent of her attempts.
In MAC games, Mobley paces the league in field goal percentage, hitting 56.1 percent of her shots. Walker (15.7), Mobley (14.6) and Wool (12.6) are averaging double figures in scoring per league game with Bailey's 58 assists and Walker's 34 steals leading the team.
Central Michigan is seeded No. 1 while Ball State received the No. 2 seed, Kent State the No. 3 seed and Ohio the No. 4 seed. Should the Broncos defeat Bowling Green, they would play Ohio at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday inside Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
First round, quarterfinal and semifinal contests will be streamed on ESPN+ and the March 14 championship game being televised live at 11 a.m. on CBS Sports Network.
