KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team heads south to Bluffton, S.C., for the third annual Low Country Invitational, hosted by Wingate University at the Crescent Pointe Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The Broncos are the two-time defending champions of the tournament, which has grown in each of the past two years. The field will contain 14 teams, including two by the hosts. Eastern Michigan and Grand Valley State are new to the field for this year's tournament. The Bulldogs are coached by Western Michigan alum Erin Thorne, who starred for the golf team from 2003-07 and was a two-time Second Team All-MAC selection.
The course measures out to 5,173 yards and is a par 71.
WMU is also looking to defend its individual title, with senior Jasmine Chee looking to repeat. Chee defeated Hannah Stephenson of Lander University in a one-hole playoff after the two tied with a final score of 149 (+7).
WMU is coming off a tough showing at the Rio Verde Invitational. The Broncos finished 15th overall, with Chee tying for seventh place. Western Michigan has shown an ability to bounce back. After finishing seventh to open the season the Broncos rattled off four straight tournaments finishing in the top five, including a second place finish at the MAC Match Play Challenge and a win at the Chippewa Invitational.
After its trip to South Carolina, WMU is back in action on April 4-5 at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational hosted by Bowling Green.
