WMU Faces Weekend Road Test at No. 3 Louisville

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A tough challenge awaits the Western Michigan baseball team this weekend as the Broncos travel to No. 3 Louisville for a three-game series, Feb. 28 – March 1.

Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan heads into the weekend riding a four-game winning streak and an overall record of 5-2. The 5-2 start for the Broncos is the best start under head coach Billy Gernon and the best start since 2008. WMU last weekend completed a four-game sweep of Alabama A&M.

Broncos & Cardinals Again
This will be the first meeting between WMU and Louisville since meeting in the opening game of the 2016 NCAA Regional. It will be the first series between the two program since 2014. In 2014, WMU dropped the first two games before tallying a 4-2 win in the series finale.

Historic Weekend at Alabama A&M
It was historic offensive weekend at Alabama A&M for the Brown & Gold, scoring 77 runs on 53 hits and recording a .344 batting average. On Saturday WMU defeated the Bulldogs, 32-4, marking the most runs scored in a game in school history. The 32 runs are the most in the NCAA this season and fourth most in the last two seasons.

Sikorski Named MAC Co-Pitcher of the Week
The Mid-American Conference announced that sophomore RHP Easton Sikorski was named MAC Co-Pitcher of the Week. Sikorski improved his overall record to 2-0 on the season, throwing a career-high eight innings allowing no runs on two hits in a 12-0 victory for WMU.

Hot Start for the Offense
Through the first two weeks of the season the Bronco offense leads the NCAA with 12.9 runs per game. The Broncos also rank fourth in the nation in total runs scored (90), seventh in base on balls (58) and ninth in on-base percentage (.447).

Stealing Everything
Western Michigan ranks first in the NCAA with 26 stolen bases this season and is 26-of-27 when attempting to steal. Junior Connor Charping leads the Broncos with eight stolen bases followed by junior Blake Dunn with six.

Early Team Gets the "W"
The Broncos are outscoring their opponents, 37-13 in the first two innings this season. WMU is 4-0 when scoring first.

Scouting the Cardinals
Louisville enters the three-game series ranked No.3 in the country with an overall record of 5-3. The Cardinals have won four straight contests including a three-game sweep of Valparaiso last weekend. In midweek action Louisville defeated Xavier at home, 8-5 on Tuesday.

The Cardinals offensively are led by Henry Davis who leads the team with a .417 batting average. Davis in seven games this season, starting six and has four RBIs, five doubles and three runs scored.

On the mound Louisville boasts 4.76 team ERA to go along with 103 strikeouts in 70 innings. Junior LHP Reid Detmers leads the Cardinals pitching staff with a 2-0 record and a 0.82 ERA. Detmers was named the 2019 ACC Pitcher of the Year and earned ABCA, D1Baseball, NCBWA and Perfect Game First Team All-American honors.
