KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan men's tennis will head back on the road with three matches this week. They will face Cleveland State tomorrow at 5 p.m., before opening Mid-American Conference play against Binghamton on Friday at 2 p.m. The Broncos will close out their road trip with an 11 a.m. contest against Yale on Sunday.Â
SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE
The Vikings are the reigning Horizon League champions, after finishing last season with an impressive overall record of 19-8. They have struggled as of late, losing three consecutive matches for a 4-5 mark in 2020. The Broncos lead the all-time series 6-1.Â
#94 nationally ranked Nico Mostardi has started this season 7-2 in singles action for Cleveland State. The Vikings also returned two All-Horizon League Second Team honorees in junior's Luke Phillips and Matthew Terry.Â
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The Bearcats are looking for their first conference play win since they defeated Toledo on April 20, 2018. Western Michigan has prevailed over Binghamton in the last four contests between the two programs, including a 7-0 sweep last season in Kalamazoo.
Sophomore Dylan Friedman has led his team this season in singles, collecting a mark of 5-2, with four of those victories coming at the No. 3 position for the Bearcats.Â
SCOUTING YALE
The Bulldogs will try to win their first match in four attempts this weekend. They finished eighth in the final Ivy League standings for 2019.
Senior Dylan King is the top returning player for Yale, as he picked up all-conference honors last season. This will mark the first ever meeting between the Broncos and the Bulldogs for men's collegiate tennis.Â
ON A ROLL
Western Michigan has earned three consecutive 7-0 victories dating back to last Tuesday. The Broncos also remained perfect at the West Hills Athletic Club, having won all five matches to take place there this season.Â
NEARING A MILESTONE
Senior
Jannik Opitz is only four wins away from becoming just the sixth Bronco to earn 200 victories in their career for men's tennis. He passed Kevin Hayward and
Casey Cullen last week after picking up six wins against Ferris State, Chicago State and Youngstown State.Â
MAC OPENER
The Broncos have won their last 18 regular season conference contests, with their last loss coming at the hands of Buffalo in 2017. They have been victorious in five straight MAC opening matches.Â
