MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Western Michigan gymnastics team finished second at the West Virginia Quad Meet on Sunday inside the WVU Coliseum. The Broncos tallied a final score of 195.075. Overall this season, WMU has surpassed 195.000 four times and upped its national qualifying score to 195.060, the highest in the Mid-American Conference.
Individually on Sunday, freshman Ronni Binstock and sophomore Carissa Ludwig had the highest finishes as Binstock claimed third on the floor and Ludwig tied for third on the vault. Junior Morgan Spence finished third in the all-around with a 38.350.
Western Michigan started the day on the bars and tallied a 48.225 to stand fourth after the first rotation. Leading the way were juniors Stacie Harrison and Alexis Olivier, who posted 9.700 tallies to tie for 11th overall.
The second rotation had WMU head to the beam and put up a 49.000, its third-highest score of the season on beam. Western Michigan jumped from fourth to second following the strong showing on beam. Freshmen Amanda Gruber and Charlotte Tishkoff and senior Amelia Mohler led the way with 9.825 scores to tie for fifth overall. For Tishkoff, the score set her career high, surpassing the 9.750 she tallied the last two weeks against Ball State and Illinois.
On the floor, the Broncos posted another 49.000 and maintained their position in second following the third rotation. Binstock turned in a 9.850 to top the squad and claim third overall. Harrison and Ludwig finished with 9.825 scores to tie for fourth while freshman Josephine Thomas checked out with a 9.775 to claim ninth.
WMU finished the day on the vault with a 48.850, its highest score of the season in the event and highest since a 48.975 against Illinois-Chicago on March 13, 2018. Ludwig finished with a 9.800 to tie her season high and tie for third while Tishkoff, Thomas and Harrison tied for sixth at 9.775.
In the all-around, Spence finished third with Tishkoff (38.075) in fourth. Bowling Green's Jovannah East took the title with a 39.275 with Towson's Ally Wesoly second with a 39.150.
The Broncos return to action Friday for a 7 p.m. contest at Central Michigan. Western Michigan has just three meets remaining before hosting the Mid-American Conference Championship at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, inside University Arena.
