RIO VERDE, Ariz. – Western Michigan senior golfer
Jasmine Chee finished tied for seventh place as the Broncos wrapped up hosting the 2020 Rio Verde Invitational at the Rio Verde Country Club on Sunday.
The teams had to play 36 holes on the day due to yesterday's round being postponed due to rain.
Arkansas State won the tournament after shooting a 54-hole total of 880 (+16), finishing well beyond second-place Northern Illinois at 892 (+28). Xavier finished third overall at 903 (+39), Seton Hall took fourth overall at 906 (+42) and Akron finished fifth with a score of 908 (+44). Western Michigan finished 15th after shooting a combined score of 945 (+81). ASU's Grayson Gladden was the medalist after winning with a total of 215 (-1), just edging out her teammate Elise Schultz, who shot a 216 (E).
"It wasn't the week we wanted here at our hosted tournament," said head coach
Elise Swartout-Mosher. "We learned a lot about what we need to do to improve."
After opening the tournament with an even par 72, Chee shot a 74 in the morning and finished it off with a 76 for a total of 222 (+6). The senior was tied for third overall in pars with 39 and had five birdies through the 54 holes. The Hong Kong native wrapped up the tournament at even par on both par threes and par fives.
"A top ten finish for Jasmine was great to see," Swartout-Mosher added. "She played solid golf all three rounds. Now we have a few days to work hard ahead of our next tournament."
Freshman
Alissa Fish was WMU's second finisher, shooting a combined total of 243 (+27).
Brooke Gibbons finished just behind her with a 244 (+28). Junior
Cameryn Lucia shot a 246 (+30) and
Fiona Wang shot a 249 (+33) to round out the top five for the Broncos'.
Western Michigan now heads to the Low Country Invitational hosted by Wingate on March. 2-3. WMU has won the tournament each of the past two years.
