KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan men's basketball head coach
Clayton Bates announced Wednesday the signing of Gus Etchison to a National Letter of Intent as part of the 2021-22 recruiting class.
Etchison hails from Arcadia, Ind., and plays at Hamilton Heights High School under the guidance of head coach Chad Ballenger. Heading into his senior campaign the 6-0 guard has amassed 1,423 points, averaging 20 per game.
"We are thrilled to welcome Gus to our basketball family. Gus is a talented guard with a great scoring ability," said Bates. "Gus is an athletic play-maker. He can play on or off the ball and will fit extremely well into our system."
Last season Etchison averaged 24.9 points per game to go along with 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists. In his junior season Etchison earned Hoosier Basketball Magazine and Indiana Basketball Source 3A First Team All-State honors. Etchison was also named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Large School All-State team.
In 25 games last season, Etchison shot 58 percent from the field and 37 percent from the behind the three-point line en route to being named Hamilton County

Indianapolis Star Boys Super Third Team.
Etchison is a three-time All-Hoosier Conference honoree and holds single-game school records for points (56), field goals made (19), three-pointers made (7) and free-throws made (11). Etchison also owns the school record for most points in a single-season with 623, breaking his own record of 548 points during his sophomore campaign.
In three seasons Ethcison has played in 71 games for Hamilton Heights, leading the team to 40 wins including 10 in league play.
